Kallista, a leading provider of luxury plumbing products, presented a series of chef-inspired stainless steel kitchen sinks by internationally known interior and product designer, Mick De Giulio, at the 2011 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas. The collection features two single basin kitchen sinks, the Soltiere 33x18x8 sink and the Multiere 45x18x8 multi-tiered sink in the Kallista brushed stainless steel finish. The collection also offers the Bacifiore 18x18x8 entertainment sink in the new Kallista polished distressed finish. Renowned for his thoughtful, yet sophisticated approach to kitchen designs, Mick De Giulio brings his expertise, attention to detail, and love of materials to Kallista unveiling a collection that is as beautiful as it is functional.

With a career that has spanned over three decades, Chicago-based De Giulio began his lifelong love of design when he was still in his teens, learning the intricacies of good design while working in his father’s cupola shop. “I was always experimenting,” explained De Giulio. “I designed my first kitchen at 19 years old and ever since it has been my passion. I began travelling to Europe and saw kitchens from a global perspective. I was especially taken with the sleek, contemporary designs by fine European kitchen manufacturers, the engineering and logic of German engineers and the artful expressiveness of Italian artisans. All has greatly influenced my work.”

De Giulio selected fabricated 16 gauge stainless steel to be used in the manufacture of the sinks to ensure that the forms would withstand even the most rigorous daily usage while still remaining beautiful for years to come. “I call stainless steel the consummate neutral,” said De Giulio. “It looks great with everything and will never go out of style because it’s so functional and durable. For those reasons, it’s a classic.”

The Soltiere and Multiere feature corner drains to maximize basin space and storage space under the cabinet, while the Bacifiore entertainment sink drain is centered to fit into even the most intimate spaces. “For my line for Kallista, I set about to create something that addressed the needs of what happens all around the sink, both from an end-user’s perspective and a designer’s perspective” said De Giulio. “Using my years’ experience as a designer as a guide, I looked at the designs from every angle. I wanted to offer a line of sinks that were functional, a range of options that addressed the surrounding environment and specific culinary needs, and choose sizes that would be ideal for the majority of homes.”

A variety of task-oriented accessories by De Giulio were developed to delight both novice and kitchen aficionado. Both sinks offer a flatware tray for rinsing cutlery and removable plantation teak cutting board, which nestle securely to the basin on a glide to allow the board to be re-positioned across the length of the sink as needed. The Multiere also offers a variety of premium options which include a colander holder and a deluxe cutting board with knife holder, sharpening rod, dishcloth holder, and drain board when reversed.

“I began working on the sliding cutting board systems for my own sink designs in 1999 and kept evolving that concept a little further with each evaluation,” said De Giulio. “I wanted to incorporate all that I love about kitchen design and make functional beautiful. I have long studied how one works and interacts in a kitchen and am constantly seeking new way to make the designs more efficient. From having a handy place for a colander or a useful location to sharpen and store a knife, to ease of chopping, preparing and washing food or where to hang a dish cloth to dry, these are all important functions and when done correctly, make for a harmonious, livable space.”
